ASTM A268 is a standard which covers seamless and welded tubes primarily used for general service purposes in medium or high temperature corrosive environments.

ASTM A268 TP405 exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to ordinary carbon steel, making it suitable for mildly corrosive environments (such as fresh water, air, and weakly acidic media), but not as good as austenitic stainless steel (such as 304). The aluminum content provides it with good resistance to high-temperature oxidation under sustained high-temperature conditions (up to approximately 815°C). The lower carbon content reduces the tendency for embrittlement in the weld heat-affected zone, improving the weldability of ASTM A268 TP405 stainless steel pipes. Furthermore, TP405 has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than austenitic stainless steel, making it more suitable for applications with frequent thermal cycling.
